New Jersey Fall Family Parks: 16 Playgrounds and Easy Trails for Kids

Fall is one of the best times for a park day in New Jersey: splash pads are off, but the heat is gone, crowds thin out, and county parks run harvest events. This guide picks 16 county parks that work well with toddlers and young kids, grouped by region, with the 2026 closures we found called out up front.

Every feature listed below was confirmed on an official county or park-partner page. Where a page did not say, we wrote unknown rather than guessing.

Check first: 2026 closures and construction

• South Mountain Reservation (Essex): the Fairy Trail and Locust Grove parking area have been closed for construction. The South Mountain Conservancy lists a reopening around Sept 30, 2026, with new benches and a shelter finishing in October. Confirm before you go.
• Cattus Island County Park (Ocean): the main trail is scheduled to close in early October 2026 for a shoreline restoration project. The new playground is separate; check the county page for what stays open.
• Monmouth County parks: the county publishes 2026/27 deer-management dates, including a Thompson Park closure on Nov 23 until noon. Check the park page on those dates.
• Colonial Park, Franklin Twp (Somerset): left out of this guide because Somerset County lists the playground as closed until further notice while a new one is built.

Van Saun County Park — Paramus (Bergen)

A full day in one place: the Bergen County Zoo, a mini train, carousel, and pony rides sit next to the ADA-accessible Harmony Playground, with more than 3 miles of walking and bike paths. Zoo, train, and carousel have fees; pony rides are listed at $5 for riders over 2 and under 50 inches. General park entry and restrooms: unknown from the county page.

Central Park of Morris County — Parsippany area (Morris)

Its All-Access Playground is built so kids of different abilities play side by side, with wheelchair-accessible swings, slides, music features, and crawl tunnels. More than 11 miles of paved and natural trails make it easy with a stroller. Restrooms or portable toilets are listed; open sunrise to sunset.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum — Morris Township (Morris)

Paved paths wind through 124 acres of gardens and specimen trees, a calm fall walk for strollers and new walkers. Visitor center and restrooms; open 8 a.m. to sunset. No pets or bikes.

Garret Mountain Reservation — Woodland Park (Passaic)

A scenic overlook, a playground, a boathouse, and a 5K loop in one park. Restrooms are listed; open sunrise to sunset.

Home of the half-mile Fairy Trail along the white-blazed Rahway Trail, where visitors leave small handmade fairy houses, plus Turtle Back Zoo and overlooks. See the closure note above before planning around the Fairy Trail.

Central Jersey

Thompson Park — Lincroft (Monmouth)

A former horse farm with open fields, a playground in the Filly Run area, and 14 miles of trails including a 4.9-mile paved loop. Restrooms open 8 a.m. to dusk. Listed as free.

Holmdel Park — Holmdel (Monmouth)

Two playgrounds, a half-mile paved loop, an arboretum, and Historic Longstreet Farm, a working 1890s farm. Longstreet Farm lists free demos this fall, including cider-making on Oct 4.

Shark River Park — Wall (Monmouth)

Wooded trails (7.5 miles), a playground, and picnic areas with grills for a quieter fall walk near the shore. No fee listed. An access-improvement project is underway near Hillside Road.

Tatum Park — Middletown (Monmouth)

Rolling hills, open fields, and woods with a playground and 6.5 miles of trails, gentle enough for small hikers.

Watchung Reservation and Trailside Nature & Science Center — Mountainside (Union)

The best rainy-day backup on this list: Trailside's indoor Children's Discovery Room and restrooms, plus a sensory-friendly trail outside. Union County's 2026 Hayrides & Campfires run at Trailside on Oct 4, 9, 11, and 16.

Shore and South Jersey

Cattus Island County Park — Toms River (Ocean)

An all-abilities playground opened in November 2025 with rubber surfacing, ground-level play, and a dedicated sand-play area, plus a 1,000-foot ADA boardwalk and the Cooper Environmental Center's animal exhibits. See the trail-closure note above.

Eno's Pond County Park — Lacey Township (Ocean)

Small and easy, with an all-access playground opened in June 2025 (sensory area, parent-and-child swing, rubber surface), nature trails, pond observation decks, and restrooms.

Wells Mills County Park — Waretown (Ocean)

Ocean County's largest park, in the Pine Barrens, with playgrounds, restrooms, a three-floor nature center with an observation deck, and trails of varying difficulty. The county lists it as open for passive recreation. The Pine Barrens Jamboree is listed for Oct 10.

Cooper River Park — Pennsauken, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Haddon Twp (Camden)

A flat lakeside loop (3.8 and 1.35 miles) that works for bikes and strollers, and the William G. Rohrer Children's Playground with first-come pavilions. Indoor restrooms are listed at the stadium, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Jake's Place at New Brooklyn Park (Camden)

A fully inclusive playground with a 4-foot fence and gate, which matters for runners. It has transfer stations, ramps, sensory play, 9,000 square feet of rubber surfacing, and a shaded picnic area. Restrooms: unknown.
